Research once. Buy once.
A short list of things worth considering, each one a click from its Amazon listing with the current price attached. What this site offers is the shortlist and the honesty about how it earns — not a laboratory.
Who writes this
Buy Better is edited by Your Name. Readers can suggest products, and anything suggested is checked and approved before it appears — so the catalogue is open, and what reaches the site is not.
You will see the word “we” in places on this site, because it is a publication with a house style. It is worth being plain about what that word covers. There is no testing panel here, no lab and no staff, and no page on this site says a product was tested, because none has been.
I choose what goes on this list and keep it short, and I am plain about the fact that the description and the price come from Amazon rather than from me.
How a product gets here
There is no testing step, and this section used to describe one. Nothing on this site has been bought, opened or used by anybody here. What follows is the whole of it.
- Step 1
Nothing is sponsored
No brand pays to appear here, and nothing on this site was gifted, seeded, loaned or sent by a PR agency. No brand has ever seen a page before it was published, and none has been offered the chance. Where that ever changes, the page it affects will say so before you read a word of it.
- Step 2
Anybody can suggest, nobody can publish
Suggestions come from readers as well as from me. None of them reach the site until they have been checked and approved. That is not gatekeeping: a page of unreviewed affiliate links is spam, it is the fastest way to lose an Associates account, and it would make everything else here worth less.
- Step 3
The details come from Amazon, not from us
A product page here carries Amazon's own title, photograph and price, taken from Amazon's own API and shown with the moment it was taken printed beside it. It is refreshed at least daily and usually within the hour you arrive. Prices and availability on Amazon change, so treat the figure here as the last one Amazon gave rather than a promise — the Amazon page is always the one that decides. What this site adds is the shortlist, not the specification.
- Step 4
The list is short on purpose
A few things worth considering in each area, rather than everything with an affiliate programme. A catalogue of a thousand links is worth nothing to a reader and is the fastest way to lose an Associates account; a short list is the only thing here with any value.
What this site is, and is not
It is a shortlist. Somebody chose the products on it and kept the list short. There is no score out of five here, no testing claim and no verdict, because none of those would be true — and a review process described in public that does not exist is a deceptive endorsement, not a marketing flourish.
It also does not show retailer star ratings or review counts anywhere. That data is licensed, and more importantly it answers a different question: a crowd can tell you whether a product arrived on time, not whether it will still be in use next year.
What you get instead is Amazon’s own description of its own product, with the moment it was fetched printed beside it, and a link that goes through this site’s own address so every outbound click is disclosed and counted here rather than guessed at. Prices and availability may vary. Whatever Amazon shows you when you arrive is the price; the figure here is only the last one Amazon reported.
How the site earns
Affiliate commission, and nothing else. When you follow a link from here to Amazon and buy something, the site may be paid a small percentage of the sale. Your price is exactly the same either way. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
There are no sponsored posts, no paid placements, no gifted products and no brand partnerships on this site. If any of that ever changes, it will be labelled on the page it affects before you read a word of it. The full affiliate disclosure sets out the details.
The editorial independence promise
These four commitments are the whole basis on which this site asks to be believed.
- Nothing is sponsored, gifted or paid for. No press samples, no paid placements, no exceptions.
- Nothing here claims to have been tested. There is no score and no verdict, because there is no test behind one.
- No brand gets a preview, a veto or a correction window. Factual errors are fixed for readers, not for brands.
- Every price is Amazon’s, dated. No figure on this site is one somebody typed in and hoped was still right — and none is presented as one Amazon is bound to honour.
- This site is an Amazon Associate, and says so.It is not endorsed by, affiliated with or speaking for Amazon beyond that, and it does not repeat Amazon’s customer reviews, star ratings or best-seller data.
What you will never find here
- Countdowns and invented urgency. No timers, no “only two left”, no “price rising soon”. We do not have that data, and making it up would be a straightforward deception.
- Best-seller and trending claims. This site has no sales data and does not repeat Amazon’s. A product is here because somebody put it on the list, which is the only claim it makes.
- Health and medical claims. A page here will tell you what a product includes and who it was built for. It will not tell you that anything treats, prevents or cures a condition, whatever the packaging says.
- Manufacturer numbers as promises. A rated capacity, battery life or output figure is a laboratory measurement taken under conditions almost nobody matches. Where those numbers appear, they appear as exactly that.
- Specifications nobody checked. A figure goes on a page because it was read off the product or its documentation, or it is left off. Guessing at a spec is how a reader ends up with something that does not fit.
- Testimonials from people who do not exist. There are no reader quotes, no five-star pull-quotes and no invented panels anywhere on this site.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, it gets fixed and the page says it was updated. If a product is revised and its specification goes stale, tell me and it will be rechecked against the current version. Corrections are not a favour to a brand; they are the point.
Found a mistake, or know something better?
Suggestions genuinely shape what goes on the list next, and corrections are read first.
